MTTI’s strength lies in its experienced and diverse  staff.  Our faculty members are certified  Montessori teachers who bring a unique educational background to every subject area. Many of our faculty have been teaching in Montessori classrooms for over 15 years.

A Program for Everyone
The Montessori Teacher Training Institute (MTTI) of South Carolina is a full affiliate American Montessori Society (AMS) teacher education program. MTTI holds accredited status for its Early Childhood and Elementary I and II teacher education certification courses from the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE Commission).

MTTI has programs for teacher certification in:

  •  Early Childhood (ages 2 ½-6)
  •  Elementary I (ages 6-9)
  •  Elementary II  (ages 6-12)

For preschool and elementary teachers who want to use Montessori methods in the classroom, individual courses may be taken on an audit basis. Teachers seeking AMS certification, must take all courses in the curriculum for each certification level.

History and Mission Statement :
At the heart of MTTI is the Clemson Montessori School, which has been in existence since 1975. Our program has emerged from over 25 years of teaching experience and leadership in Montessori education in South Carolina and the southeast. We saw a need to share our years of expertise with the Montessori community.

Our mission at MTTI is to provide a quality training resource for all people with the desire to be in a Montessori classroom. MTTI training programs are practical, hands-on, and self-exploring which model the environment that new teachers can provide for children in a Montessori classroom. The goal of MTTI is to help teachers develop the skills and learning tools needed to provide an enriched learning experience for children in the classroom.

A Training Program for Everyone

Where do you find the training to use Montessori teaching methods? The Montessori Teacher Training Institute (MTTI) of South Carolina is one of only four National Center of Montessori Education (NCME) affiliated training centers nationwide offering complete Early Childhood and Elementary teacher preparation programs.

At MTTI you'll find programs for Montessori Teacher Certification in:

• Early Childhood (ages 3-6)
• Elementary (ages 6-9)
• Elementary (ages 9-12)

For preschool and elementary teachers who want to use Montessori methods in the classroom, individual courses can be taken as an audited course or for ACE college credit only. Teachers seeking full NCME certification take the full curriculum (or specified equivalent) for each certification level.

Training Overview
Each teacher training program includes independent study and workshops on Montessori concepts in developmental psychology, teaching methodology, classroom management and curriculum preparation.

The Early Childhood Certification program includes the development and use of materials for instruction in practical life, language, reading, sensorial foundations for math, history, art, music, art, geography and science.

The Elementary Certification program prepares teachers to respond to the broad range of interests of children during this age, by inter-relating subject areas in biology, geography, history, math, science, cultural arts, and music.

In each training program, under the supervision of the course instructor, students will also observe and practice teaching at an approved Montessori school.

How To Receive Certification
Early Childhood and Elementary Certifications are earned by successful completion of full year programs which include independent study, academic workshops and a teaching practicum. After completing the Elementary Certification (ages 6-9), Elementary Certification (ages 9-12) can be earned in an intensive 3 week academic workshop followed by a comprehensive exam that recaps ages 6-12 materials and philosophy.

Certification Requirements:

• Prerequisite NCME certifications or equivalent course work.
• Successful completion of all course work.
• Minimum completion time is 12 months, however, it may take up to 36 months to complete.

While a B.A. is not required for certification, it is recommended. Individual state requirements vary with regard to teacher credentials and employment.

How Do I Enroll?
MTTI offers coursework for the three programs throughout the year. Students will be asked to complete an application form and participate in an admissions interview before beginning the program. Tuition will be paid in stages throughout the training period. Click here for more information.
